Seattle…how I love you!

April 2nd, 2011

Spring is here which means my favorite time of year is right around the corner – SUMMER!!

Last summer was a blast! I shot 16 weddings, traveled to Seattle several times (for workshops and for leisure), went to the beach, did touristy things in my own city..let’s just say I did A LOT!

I went to Seattle numerous times last year for personal time with my boyfriend. We went shopping, toured Safeco Field, walked all over town, toured the EMP &  he took me out to the ball game. Oh & we caught our first MLS game! We did tonnes of walking & sight seeing.  I took plenty of photographs but none with my professional cameras.

So last September I headed into Seattle for a day trip with about 15 other professional photographers from around Vancouver. We went to learn & network with other wedding professionals.  We went there with a plan – we’re going to do a photowalk at the end of the day. I was super excited for this!

I love Seattle. I love the buildings, the pier, the new mixed with the old. I love that it’s something different but still familiar to me.

And so with our cameras locked & loaded we set out around town to capture our views of the city. We had a particular location we wanted to see – the GUM WALL! Yes, that’s right it’s exactly what you’re picturing…an entire wall covered in *used* chewing gum.

I know you’re probably thinking “why is she blogging about this like 6 months later”. Well I was thinking about how much I love summer & I came across the photographs I took that day. I fell in love with them all over again. I just wanted to share them with you :)

Enjoy!

Sweet & Romantic | Vancouver Wedding Photographer

March 23rd, 2011

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with a very kind, loving family as two very important people in their lives got married.

Laurie & Dean are loving, caring, kind individuals. When they became husband and wife they agreed to continue to love and care for each other no matter the circumstances. They also have 7 beautiful children, all are unique & strong individuals just like their parents. They promised their children to continue to be there for them and to continue to develop their relationships with each of them.

This family has an amazing bond as a whole unit but the smaller bonds within are just as amazing and loving.

The ceremony was very small, only their children and a few witnesses, but so beautiful! They held the ceremony at the historic Milner Chapel in Langley – I couldn’t have thought of a more suitable location for this special ceremony!

After the ceremony we did some classical, romantic photographs of Laurie & Dean on the Milner property.

Although I only spent a small portion of the day with this family, I was able to see how much love they all  have for each other. I feel truly honored to have been able to capture these very special moments for Laurie & Dean and their family.

As a way of celebrating their wedding, the entire family took the limo into Vancouver to dine at the Pan Pacific.

Laurie & Dean – I hope this special day was everything you hoped for and I’m a very happy to have shared it with you.

Enjoy your sneak peek!

Engagement Fusion Photography

March 20th, 2011

Spring is officially here!
Every year spring means engagement sessions for all my couples. We go out to our favorite locations and have a ball shooting some fun, quirky, romantic, edgy and classic images of each couple leading up to their wedding.

This year will be no different. I love doing these sessions because it gives me a good opportunity to really get to know my clients and to make them feel comfortable being photographed.

I’ve had a new element to all my photography this year – bits of videography. It’s better known as fusion photography. Where I pair still photographs with small clips of video to create a whole new experience for my clients.

I got a bit of a head start to the sessions this year with one of my August couples. We set out in mid February to tackle Grouse Mountain for their engagement session.

I took this session as a perfect opportunity to showcase my fusion photography while we were out on the ice rink!

See for yourself in this short video I’ve made for the couple.

Winter Wonderland Wedding | Vancouver Wedding Photographer

March 17th, 2011

The first wedding of 2011! I was so excited for this wedding for so many reasons – the 1st of the year, the snow, the location, the gorgeous couple…I think you get the idea ;)

The wedding was in Fort Langley at the Community Hall – I love this hall!

Derek & Sherisse had the day perfectly planned. Sherisse was so organized, you’d think she was a wedding planner.

They went with a very dramatic scheme but threw in a cute & cuddle factor too. They did everything in red and black and added cat (yes, as in meow meow) accents where they could. They pulled off 2 additional plans that were, in my opinion, completely awesome – personalized table names & wine labels with a throwback to their childhood’s. The table names were genius & hilarious with well thought out jokes & nicknames with their family & friends. The wine labels…oh the wine labels…so hilarious with different photographs of them as kids in the 80′s – mushroom cuts & spandex included!

The ladies got ready with the team from Wedded Bliss while I zoomed around the house capturing the details involved. Wedded Bliss is a vendor I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few times and the results are ALWAYS amazing – I can’t recommend them enough!

The gentlemen arrived at the house before the ceremony for Derek & Sherisse’s first look. The first thing I noticed on the guys – monogrammed ties! I asked Derek where he got them, his response was “Google ‘ties that don’t suck’ you’ll find them” LOL! Try it – do it now…see, he was right! Ha! Anyways, the ties were done by Cyberoptix TieLab.

By the time we let Derek & Sherisse spend some quality quiet time together for the First Look, the snow had started! Armed with big coats & umbrellas, we went next door to the most breath taking driveway ever and had some fun. This driveway was ridiculously long & perfectly lined with trees – loved it.

We also ventured to a few spots in Fort Langley before deciding it was far too cold to be out any longer! With our fingers frozen and our noses red, we made our way back to the Fort Langley Hall for the Ceremony.

The ceremony & reception were both beautiful with so many highlights! The MC, Aaron, was a natural and had the whole room laughing. The song list for the evening was well thought out & original – no “I Got A Feeling” at this wedding. The couple were so relaxed and were really enjoying the evening with all their guests. I could keep going forever, the day was that amazing!

The day was absolutely incredible. We had perfect weather (even though it was a tad chilly, the snow more than made up for it), an amazing crew of vendors involved and the family, friends and guests of Derek and Sherisse were fabulous!

Derek & Sherisse; I hope you had an absolutely perfect day and thoroughly enjoyed your honeymoon in Jamaica. You (and your Bridal Party) were are true pleasure to photograph. We are very honored to have shared this special day with you!

Now it’s time for the goods – photograph galore ;) Enjoy!!

A special thanks goes out to my always reliable & trusty associate photographer, Darko Sikman. You did a great job – as usual!

Learning, Shooting, Practicing | Vancouver Wedding Photographer

March 4th, 2011

Being a professional photographer doesn’t just mean being paid to take photographs. There’s a lot of behind the scenes learning, networking, honing and practicing to stay on top of your game and to be continually improving.  In the photography world there are endless resources to help you improve your craft; from reading daily forums to attending yearly conferences & workshops, the knowledge is endless!

For myself, I am constantly reading & practicing, trying new things to help improve my skill & knowledge. I make it my goal to improve myself & my company each & every year. At the beginning of each year I tell myself that THIS year is going to be the best year yet. I have not let myself down and am always extremely happy with my progress.

Being a professional will always be about learning & improving, for me.

This year I am more excited than previous years because I have enrolled in a 5 day intensive training workshop & networking experience. I’ll be spending 5 days with 2 of the World’s Top 10 Wedding Photographers to learn from them. I am really looking forward to meeting them because I have followed their work for awhile now – they’re my version of a celebrity!

Before this big workshop takes place I will be headed to Seattle for a 1 day course. There we’ll learn from 2 of the most popular & well known photographers. What will I be learning? The premise of the workshop is improving off camera flash usage. I’m sure that means nothing to some of you but basically it’ll make my photography even more kick ass :P

Not only do I attend these sorts of workshops to learn but I am constantly learning from other local photographers. We have a very close nit community of like-minded professionals who enjoy sharing their knowledge with others – it’s a win-win for everyone! We meet monthly to chit-chat, we plan photo walks and studio days and, most of all, we are here to encourage each other.

Because of all these great resources I’m able to continue doing what I love and be able to continually improve the memories I create for my clients. They also keep me extremely busy year round and keep me focused.

This year is going to be a great year with a plethora of new creativity! I have awesome clients and can’t wait to photograph their weddings.

If you want to stay on top of what I’m learning and where I’m going and see many additional photographs that don’t make it to the blog, come visit the Facebook Page.

Ice Skating at Grouse | Vancouver Engagement Photographer

February 28th, 2011

A couple weekends ago I got together with one of the couple’s that I’ll be working with later this year. We decided that Grouse Mountain was the perfect location for their Engagement session since their wedding will be in the middle of summer AND they both love winter sports!

I was extremely excited for this session because they wanted to spend some time on the ice rink at the top of the mountain. I can’t skate, well maybe I can, but I wasn’t about to strap on some skates while holding a camera…that would have been a recipe for disaster! They did stellar – it helps that she skates competitively :)

After spending quite a bit of time outside, we decided to take the shoot inside the lodge for some warmth and some more intimate portraits. We were all frozen but made the most of the location!

The session was so much fun & I can’t wait for their wedding in August!

Enjoy :)

Valentine’s Day | Vancouver Boudoir Photography

January 20th, 2011

It’s so hard to believe Valentine’s Day is just around the corner!

3.5 weeks/25 days/600 hours/36,000 minutes :D

For 2011 I am offering a special rate for all Boudoir sessions booked before January 31st!

It’s a 1 hour mini session & it includes a “brag” book for your Prince!

Book your session soon because there are only a limited number of sessions.

Some of my favorite Valentine’s Day quotes are below for your enjoyment!

“You know when you have found your Prince because you not only have a smile on your face but in your heart as well.”

“Many are the starrs I see, but in my eye no starr like thee.”

“Love is a symbol of eternity.  It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end.”

And one last one with a touch of humour.

“You have to walk carefully in the beginning of love; the running across fields into your lover’s arms can only come later when you’re sure they won’t laugh if you trip.”

Rock Ceremony

January 13th, 2011

The other day I was perusing some Wedding sites & blogs that I frequent and I came across a fantastic idea – well I think it’s fantastic!

It’s a twist on an already popular event. I’m sure most people are familiar with a sand ceremony being performed during a wedding ceremony, am I right?

If not, its purpose is to symbolize 2 peoples lives coming together into one but still remaining as individuals. Each person, simultaneously, pours their sand into a larger vase , where their 2 different colored sands mix together but are still identifiable.

So this new fantastic idea is called a Rock ceremony!

Here’s how it works;

At the beginning of the ceremony, every guest will get a smooth, polished, river rock and a pen. As the ceremony starts, the officiant will say something along these lines:

“Before you met, your lives were on different paths with different destinations. But love has brought you together and joined these separate paths into one. Each one of your friends and family here today have been given a small, polished stone that represents their unique individuality and their presence at your wedding today. You also each have a stone of your own that symbolizes your previous separate lives, separate sets of friends, separate families, and the different life’s journeys you once traveled. I will now ask that everyone please take out the stone you have been given and pause to make a wish or blessing for happiness and good will for the couple for the future of their marriage.”

Then the officiant will ask the guests to write a short sentiment on one side, and sign their name on the other with the pen they are given.  They are all collected, and then displayed in a glass vase after the wedding.

Isn’t that the greatest thing you’ve ever heard?? And wouldn’t it just look so neat in your home!
